Event Details

AfroComicCon is a virtual convention to be held on October 24, 2020.  This event is free to everyone and will be held on a portal on the Oakland Technology & Education Center’s (OTEC) website.

Sponsored by the NNPA, the Oakland A’s, and Pixar Entertainment, AfroComicCon promises to be a day full of exciting panels, screenings, entertainment, gaming, cosplay and special guests. The 12-hour event is currently slated to be live-streamed across multiple platforms including YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook.

Confirmed special guests are Black Panther actor Denzel Whitaker, comedian and actor Godfrey, DJ and world-famous rapper DJ Kwame, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and composer Patrice Rushen and executive producer and writer on The Boondocks, American Gods, and Marvel’s Runaways, Rodney Barnes. Award-winning journalist, host and founder of The Burton Wire Nsenga Burton, will be the host of the AFCC Film Festival, slated to screen films from creators across the diaspora.

AfroComicCon was created as an annual comic convention for everyone with a focus on the African-American community in Oakland, CA and the greater SFBay Area. With the popularity of films like Black Panther, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and HBO’s Watchmen Black and Brown
youth finally get to see themselves as heroes and not as victims. It is in that spirit that AfroComicCon Creator and Co-founder Mike James and Co-founder Hally Bellah-Guther wanted to create a virtual convention to help entertain and expand the organization’s sense of community.

“Despite the devastating impact of COVID19, we are thrilled to be able to bring AfroComicCon to our community virtually. Black and brown young people worldwide will be able to see how they can achieve through art, writing, gaming, animation, cosplay and storytelling,” – Mike James (AFCC
Creator/Co-Founder)

Panels are scheduled across multiple interests including Art, Activism, Entertainment, Gaming, and
Writing. Each panel will be hosted by a thought leader in each discipline including celebrity guests, industry experts and creatives. In addition, participants and fans of all ages will enjoy entertainment throughout the day. Including a Live DJ stream, Gaming tournament, musical guests and a Virtual Cosplay Competition.

“AfroComicCon takes an active approach to serving the community. Our convention not only provides entertainment, but attendees can refine their illustration skills, learn animation, build video games and even discuss how social justice issues can be addressed in the creative spaces,” – Hally Bellah-Guther (AFCC Co-Founder) AfroComicCon’s goal will be to provide a welcoming and safe virtual space for underrepresented nerds of color. Regardless of age, gender identity, sexual preference, religious beliefs, or special needs, all are invited to celebrate science-fiction, fantasy, comic books, gaming and more in this special virtual event.
