Indie Comics: Catalyst
Catalyst Issue 1
Catalyst popped on our radar during our visit to Blerdcon 2019. Great art always catches my eye, so I was excited to see what this graphic novel was about after meeting creator Torian Tarrant. Catalyst #1 is a 40 page one-shot action/crime comic book that is presented in 2 parts, meant to serve as a prelude to a live-action series currently in development.

The narrative of Catalyst revolves around Dom Cross, a mercenary who is betrayed and left for dead overseas by the unit of mercenaries he once called family. Dom’s quest for revenge leads him back to the streets in the USA where he becomes embroiled in an underworld power struggle, all while hunting down his betrayers.

When I created Catalyst I intended on blending two of my favorite genres, high-octane action and crime noir. I’d say it’s akin to John Wick meets Boardwalk Empire, if Boardwalk Empire was inspired by French film noir and set in West Baltimore.

I was lucky enough to be able to check out the first issue early and I was definitely impressed by the high quality art and direction that the Tyrant Creative Media team is going. The first issue felt like a crossover of the Punisher and Spawn to me. I hate dropping too many spoilers, so if you vibe with those types of comics, make sure to check out Catalyst and support their kickstarter at Catalyst Kickstarter.
