My Hero Academia Season 4 Episode 1 Review

Warning Spoilers!

My Hero Academia Season 4 Episode 1 Review

Episode 1 of MHA season 4 honestly does not have much action. I actually expected this after the climatic ending of season 3.  The episode opens with a group of reporters trying to figure out who All Might was speaking to and who his successor will be.

An ace reporter Taneo Tokuda gains access to UA to do “interviews” with the students, but his real scoop is to figure out who the successor of All Might will be.  The story quickly recaps the characters and their quirks as he whittles down plausible options.  In an anti-climatic manner, he quickly deduces that Deku is All Might’s successor without actually interviewing any of the candidates.  This guy is as great of a detective as Batman.

Deku is caught by the reporter speaking to All-Might which further confirms his deduction.  All Might walks away leaving Deku with a gift of meat buns.  Taneo secretly snaps a picture of the engagement and prints it out (Taneo’s quirk is making cameras appear anywhere on his body).  Taneo reveals himself to Deku and lets him know that he is aware of his secret.

The reporter let’s Deku know that he will not expose his secret since All Might once saved his father during his childhood. Taneo is simply at peace still knowing that there is hope for society and that a successor is being groomed.  This invigorates Deku to work even harder. The episode ends with Ochacho asking Deku about his conversation with the reporter and it cutting to the credits after they go to eat the meat buns.

Overall it was a very nice episode to ease back into the series.  If someone has never watched MHA before, the recap at the beginning is probably good enough to get them caught up to the series.  The ending gets you excited for what else what will happen this season.  I am hoping we get to see more action from Mirio soon since he has be shown so much in the marketing materials.
