NC Comicon Bull City Recap

Blerd was originally founded in Durham, so of course we had to check out NC Comicon which was right in our backyard at the Durham Convention Center.  November 2019 may go down as the greatest month to be a geek ever (Disney+, gaming releases, and conventions), and NC Comicon was definitely a part of that story for us at Blerd. Here are some of the highlights of the event for us:

The Special Guests:

There were a ton of extremely talented special guests at NC Comicon.  I grew up with the Ninja Turtles, so Kevin Eastman being in attendance was a special treat.  He was even giving away free autographs on Saturday and Sunday.

A couple of very nice touches to the event were the limited edition prints and limited edition shirts.  Maybe the coolest event extra was the fact that each of the guest gave out their own special trading card for the event.

We wanted to make sure to give a special shoutout to Marcus Williams for taking time to speak with us in the vendor hall during opening night.  He is an amazing illustrator and artist who will make you feel welcome as soon as you speak with him.  His latest project, Tuskegee Heirs crushed its Kickstarter goal.  We made sure to pick up a few of his prints and will hang them up in the Blerd office (if we ever get one haha).

The Blerd team also got to finally meet with Danny J Quick and his team in person (thanks for always sharing and commenting on our page Danny!).  He is a comic book aficionado and creator as well.  The main protagonist of his project Ace Blade shares the same name as me, so that was an immediate pickup. Make sure to check out 4th Wall and support them.

At events like this you are always going to see a ton of merch that you want, so make sure to go with a set budget.  I did splurge a bit and purchased some prints from artist L Jamal Walton.  His stylistic combination of pop art and geekdom spoke to me.

The Blerd Panel

There was a panel on blerds at NC Comicon, so you know we had to attend.  The panel was hosted by Hilton George one of the co-founders of Blerdcon.  If you read our Blerdcon review, then you know that we already expect to see you at Blerdcon 2020.  Hilton educated a packed room on the the basics of what blerd means and why creating a positive community is so important.  We got to chat with him a bit later on Saturday night as well and he definitely got us excited for the future of Blerdcon.

The Cosplayers

It isn’t a con without cosplayers, and NC Comicon absolutely did not disappoint.  Here are some of our favorite pictures from the event:
