What’s Their Twitch (Mixer) JaneyLaney

Whats their Twitch 1

Grace and Peace Blerd Fam! If you didn’t know, Twitch is the platform for everything gaming related and creativity. Whether its gaming, music, or art you can just about find what you’re looking for on this platform. You can find some of the biggest names in the gaming community there. I wanted to create a spotlight for growing Twitch streamers and content creators that I know you will enjoy. Especially for those that have been affected by the ending of Mixer, I wanted help with their transition to Twitch.

Mixer, owned by Microsoft, was a popular live streaming platform for gamers. It was launched in January 2016 as Beam. Some would say that Mixer was in competition with Twitch when it came to the treatment of their partners and business deals. On June 22, 2020, Mixer was scraped by Microsoft because they were unable to compete with other services. Mixer was in an agreement to collab with Facebook Gaming and redirected their users there, but most of them decided to go to Twitch. Partnered Mixer streamers were offered opportunities to Facebook Gaming programs.

I want to introduce you to JaneyLaney! So “What’s Their Twitch?”, you can find her at www.twitch.tv/TheRealJaneyLaney. Round 1:

Give us an introduction to who you are and the in and outs about your broadcast. Share with the class about your Twitch channel and your community.

Hello there! My name is JaneyLaney (not sure if you need our real names or not but if you did Janae is my real name) I am a content creator, newly migrated over to Twitch. My channel is all about exploring life through education, gaming, IRLs, and web shows. One of the things that we have coined is the term #BlackMinecraft. #BlackMinecraft is our community-wide goal to spread the idea that diversity and disability should be two of the core values in society that ought to be highlighted. We are rebuilding since moving over from Mixer, but our passion for education and kids still stands.

Tell us about your former Mixer community.

My Mixer community was like a giant classroom! Although there were people of all different ages, everybody always wanted to learn and share their life experiences with one another. We were very diverse and spoke on how diversities on a daily. We played a lot of Minecraft and would have a weekly hour + long chats about the gaming industry and other current events.

How do you feel about the changes from Mixer to Twitch?

The change was anything but exciting at first. As a full time family-friendly streamer, it came with much backlash from my kid community as well as many parents and other adults. A lot of people felt like I was just abandoning them, not realizing the full situation. Many are still concerned about Twitch and have told me that they are no longer interested in my content. I felt like I lost my home and my family. I have been talking to a lot of the same people every single day for 2 years and it was like it was just gone, due to…I don’t even know. They never officially told us why they closed.

My first 2 weeks were just filled with tears and clouded judgment. But now, although I am still upset due to the loss of many great community members, I am starting to realize what opportunity I have now. I am no longer being sheltered and tied down to just Xbox users, there are people who come to twitch who do not even own a system, they just want to see and appreciate the content! There are so many helpful tools for content growth and monetization, I am truly excited to be in this position.

Twitch is all about games and creativity. What type of content do you stream on your channel?

I stream pretty much whatever I want to share with everyone. Sometimes I play a video game, sometimes I may do some crazy science experiments, or sometimes I just want to talk. I just love being able to share my hobbies and thoughts in real-time with everyone. I consider content creation to be like a talent show or showcasing. You are showcasing yourself and what you like to do with your time.

What made you start this journey in streaming and when did you start?

I watched my grandmother pass away and just needed some people to talk to that weren’t going to bring it up. I found Mixer randomly when I searched for live chats (trust me I know this could’ve gone a whole other route). I started getting familiar with the site and kept getting appointed as a moderator in channels. One day nobody was on and I wanted to talk to people, so I cut the stream on to find out what it was like as a streamer. I started taking it seriously when I realized how many children needed a safe space to watch content and talk to people about video games and life.

What are some of the issues and challenges that you’ve faced on Twitch and how did you overcome them?

The hurt of not being accepted by other Black Content Creators is something that haunts me. There have been so many times on Mixer where I was just tolerated because I was friends with somebody, rather than being welcomed and celebrated. I was scared, but I took a chance and did my first decent-sized raid in a partner channel that I saw had a Hype Train. I was LITERALLY greeted with open arms into EbonixSim’s community. Like they were so nice, it felt almost too good to be true and I was actually crying and happy over the out pour of love just shown to me for wanting to hang out. She had a bunch of people in there and chat was really crazy, but she and the rest of her community took the time out to virtually hug me it felt like. And that was something I just needed.

What are some of the resources and support that you use, that’s out there for creating a broadcast on Twitch?

The Twitch FAQ and “back office” areas are really great resources. Especially for this quick questions I sometimes have. I also tend to go to YouTube as well as speak to other partners and ambassadors, just in case I would like some more clarity.

Blerd is all things nerd and geek through a people of color culture lens. What makes you a blerd?

Funny thing, I only heard about the term last week! I think what makes me a blerd is the fact that I tend to over-analyze situations and go above and beyond by default. Want to use video gaming in the school systems so that kids can learn more hands-on regardless of their learning  curves. I have taught kids Chemistry using Minecraft. I tend to think a lot about how things and people connect and how those connections can benefit.

Round 2:

You’ve only been given 3 games to play for the rest of your life, what are you playing and why?

Tekken Tag 2 – I grew up with fighting games and this game will allow me to have my nostalgia. Uncharted – These scenario sounds like a primitive happening. This game will help keep my stamina and sanity up. Minecraft – It is soothing but can also get diabolical. I can be creative and build all day, risk dying in survival, or play some crazy story line in adventure mode.

Which video game character is bae?

Nathan Drake – Uncharted

What’s a game that you absolutely hate but everyone else might like?

Grand Theft Auto

Your favorite person is making your favorite dish, who is it and what is it?

My Grandma. Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp with grilled pineapple and rice pilaf, with a small amount of garlic butter and some lemon zest.

If you could be any superhero who would it be and why?

Hong Kong Phooey. He is very chill and nobody ever expects him to get the bad guys. I think I would love to be him because people already love to underestimate me, yet I come out victorious. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be a dog in a cute outfit?!
