Hiiiiiiiiiiii! My name is Yasmin but I prefer to be called Yaya. I decided to name my channel/brand “YayaLovesAnime” because it was a perfect fit for me & is an automatic conversation starter when meeting anyone new since they’ll typically ask me “what’s your favorite anime” & BOOM there’s a connection. My Twitch emotes and sub badges are all anime-inspired and are illustrated as me as some of my favorite anime characters.
I’m 27 (as of June 13th), Married, a Social Worker, live in Georgia, & a fur mom to my Chow Chow Pooh (also my stream mascot).
I currently stream on my PlayStation 4 (PC streams coming soon) with just the earpiece the PS4 came with (lol seriously I still don’t have a headset). I also typically stream without a camera however my community has the option to use their accumulated channel points for me to use my PS4 cam & “Show Pooh” with me making cameos every now & then.
I affectionately refer to my community as YLAGANG Family Baby Loves. My community is literally a family, soon as you step into my stream, follow me or join my discord you’re welcomed with open arms. I’m all about uplifting my fellow Queens & Kings with positivity. We also support each other’s streams, goals, and aspirations. My community often refers to me as “Mama Yaya” because I’d how much I care about them & I have a nurturing personality.
I utilize my platform to spread positive vibrations/energy and bring awareness to issues I’m passionate about, the two biggest issues being Mental health awareness & PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). I’m not really good at games but I love playing, meeting new people & just having fun. Streaming is an escape & part of my self-care.
Twitch is all about games and creativity. What type of content do you stream on your channel?
I’m a Simmer turned variety streamer so I typically stream the following: GTA 5, Sims 4, Apex Legends, Shinobi Strikers, Dead by Daylight, Overcooked 2, Overwatch, Fortnite, Uno, Monopoly, etc. I also like to sing (but can’t sing) so be on the lookout for twitch sings content too.
What made you start this journey in streaming and when did you start?
I’ve always loved gaming & have been playing the Sims forever. Last year I FINALLY found out about CC (custom content) & mods, this lead me down a deep rabbit hole and I was SHOOK with what I found: The Black Simmer, Xmiramira, and Keeyuh. Which also led me to twitch. I started finding other Black Girl Gamers on Twitter, talking & connecting with them & watching streams.
I finally said, “Hey if anybody else can stream when they play video games, why not me too?”. I spent two months researching, asking questions & for advice before I started my first stream on June 15, 2019. Being able to connect with people who look like me and love the same games I love who actually will play with me gave me an adrenaline rush. I play for fun & decided if I ever became affiliated I’d take it seriously. Welp, on my 7th-day streaming I was invited to the Twitch Affiliate Program & the rest is history.
What are some of the issues and challenges that you’ve faced on Twitch and how did you overcome them?
Some of the biggest issues I’ve faced on twitch have been the racist trolls who come in streams using racial slurs to attempt to upset me. My mods and I ban them immediately & don’t feed into their negativity.
I would say consistency was a struggle for me, in the year I’ve been streaming I’ve taken a few breaks due to moving or other unforeseen circumstances. The best advice I received was to make a schedule and try to stick to it as much as possible & just let my community know when I need to take a break/mental health day.
What are some of the resources and support that you use, that’s out there for creating a broadcast on Twitch?
My biggest support/resource would most definitely be DISCORD. I promise and assure you once you understand discord you can utilize it to grow your community and do so many great things. I’m so glad it was suggested for me to make a discord. I initially thought “who would join it and why” & Now we have 182 members of my community who love and support me unconditionally. We have family & anime night where we watch shows and movies together. We’re having a block party on my birthday with a live DJ performance. Discord alerts all my discord members every time I go live on twitch along with a lot of my community members when they stream. & I’m able to keep in contact with my community daily which grows our bonds.
Melanin Gamers is an international community & brand I’m proud to represent and also glad to see continue to grow. Most importantly Melanin Gamers promotes diversity, positivity & inclusivity to all whilst also advocating for people of color who are Gamers which aligns with my personal morals and value. I’m part of their stream team on twitch so make sure yall follow & check us out.
I’m also part of the Black girl Gamers Facebook group. There are over 5,000 members internationally.
I’ve also found and connected with so many new people from Twitch through Twitter using tags or finding threads of Black Content creators/streamers. Same with Instagram, I utilize hashtags on all my posts and have met some incredible streamers through this. Twitter also can connect to twitch & send out automatic tweets with your link when you go live.
Blerd is all things nerd and geek through a people of color culture lens. What makes you a Blerd?
What makes me a Blerd is my love for anime and video games. I was first introduced to anime when I was 6 years old watching Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon when they came on Cartoon network & fell in love with anime before I even knew it was anime lol.
More of my favorite animes are Naruto, Boruto, InuYasha, Kakegurui, Jojos Bizarre Adventures, Cannon Busters, Carole and Tuesday, Demon Slayer, Fairy Tale, Seven Deadly Sins, One Punch Man, Hunter X Hunter, Death Note, Black Butler & Yu Yu Hakusho.
I got my first game system when I was about 3/4 years old called a Sega Pico & I absolutely loved it. Of course, I’d go on to have a shared PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Gameboys, etc as the years went on. Y’all know I gotta get the PS5 when it comes out too!
You’ve only been given 3 games to play for the rest of your life, what are you playing and why?
Sims, GTA & Shinobi Strikers (Naruto to Boruto).
Sims because it’s one of my lifetime favorite games when I tell yall I’ve spent so much money on expansion packs for pc and ps4 it’s ridiculous. Even though I don’t play with mods or CC yet it’s still an escape to play.
GTA because I love being able to fly around on my oppressor, I could play my Fav adversary mode all day (Hunting pack 1/”Lemme drive the ice cream truck”) & I’d get to play online with my friends.
Last but not least, Shinobi Strikers because of the customization in this game with the outfits and features (skin tone, hair, etc), living out my fantasy of being a ninja & because it’s multi-player.
Which video game character is bae?
Ajay Che aka Lifeline from Apex
What’s a game that you absolutely hate but everyone else might like?
I hate to admit it but FORTNITE. I literally can’t build to save my life lol. I only play it with my friends & I downloaded it for the creative mode to play Prop hunt, DASSIT Suh.
Your favorite person is making your favorite dish, who is it and what is it?
My husband Roderick is making me Crab legs/seafood boil with shrimp, lobster tail, corn, potatoes & sausage. Lawd, I love seafood!!!!
If you could be any superhero who would it be and why?
Nubia aka Wonder woman. She is the twin sister of Diana. Nubia is absolutely gorgeous with her beautiful dark skin, she’s strong, resilient & most importantly she looks like me.
