Who is Spawn?

In today’s character breakdown we’re going to answer the question — “Who Is Spawn Of Image Comics? The Venom-like Spirit Of Vengeance!”

Al Simmons aka Spawn first appeared in Spawn #1 in 1992 and was created by Todd McFarlane. Spawn was a government assassin who was murdered (burned alive) by his own best friend and partner Chapel at the order of their boss Jason Wynn, due to him learning about Al’s crisis of conscious. It didn’t help that he was also aware of the secret government blackops comings and goings. As a result of all of the innocent people he killed while working as an assassin for the CIA, Al was sent straight to hell.

Al sold his soul to Malebolgia, an Archdemon of hell. In return, Spawn wanted to be sent back to earth to be with his wife Wanda. The stipulation was that he had to become a hellspawn, a powerful demon under Malebolgias control and a general in his army in his war against heaven.

Of course Malegolgia, being a demon did send him back, however it was 5 years after he died. Al comes back to find that his wife Wanda had already moved on with her life, and had remarried to his best friend Terry Fitzgerald.
